Description

A young woman bends at the water’s edge, seen from the side, her body turned so that her torso and profile face right while her long, loose auburn hair falls the length of her back. She holds a white cloth bunched against her chest with both hands, not yet drying herself, more caught in the pause before or after bathing. Behind her, a heap of rose-pink drapery and a pair of dark shoes sit on the bank, and a patch of blue water shows through the greenery beyond.

Renoir paints the flesh in warm, creamy tones, pink at the cheek and shoulder, softened everywhere by blended, almost powdery brushwork with no hard contour separating body from air. The background, by contrast, is looser and more broken: dabs of ochre, gold and green stand in for foliage, and the blue water is little more than a few strokes of cool color. The white cloth she holds is built from thick, confident strokes of near-pure white and pale grey, the brightest passage on the canvas.

Painted in 1895, this belongs to the period when Renoir had turned decisively toward the female bather as his central subject, favoring softly rounded, idealized forms over the sharper social portraiture of his earlier career. The pearly, almost porcelain treatment of the skin and the deliberately simplified, sketch-like setting are typical of how loosely he treated everything except the figure itself in these years.

The figure sits large in the frame, warm-toned and softly lit, which gives the piece real presence without excess. The surrounding pink and green keep the composition lively while the pale body remains the clear focal point, a picture built for a room that can carry a classical nude without it feeling cold or overly formal.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
