Description
Despite its title, this small Renoir study is a pure landscape: a single tree in full autumn blaze, its canopy built from strokes of orange, rust, and gold, stands against a windswept blue sky rendered in choppy, diagonal brushstrokes. Below, a sloping hillside is sketched in loose greens, ochres, and touches of red, with no figures, buildings, or architecture in sight, only sunlit foliage and open country.
Painted in 1882, the canvas captures Renoir’s fascination with color and light rather than any specific place or story. The warm oranges of the tree play against the cool blues of the sky in a vivid, almost abstract contrast that has kept this small study appealing more than a century later.
We reproduce Souvenir d’Alger as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes and shipped ready to hang.
