Description
Large pink and white roses fill most of this canvas, their heavy, ruffled heads leaning together in a loose cluster of foliage. In the upper left corner Renoir opens a small window onto a garden beyond, a soft blur of trees and autumn colored shrubs under a pale sky, so the flowers appear to have been picked from the very ground shown behind them.
The roses themselves are built from thick, wet strokes of pink and cream, with deeper rose and touches of scarlet marking the shadowed centers of the blooms. Green leaves are laid in broadly, almost abstractly, giving the whole surface a loose, tactile energy typical of Renoir’s late still life work.
This piece, held at the Phoenix Art Museum, is offered here as a hand painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, faithfully recreating the original for home display rather than replacing it.
