Description
Renoir looked down from a high vantage point onto a chalky path that loops back on itself as it climbs a grassy hillside above Wargemont, on the Normandy coast. Dark woodland fills the horizon, while sunlit patches of yellow-green scrub break up the slope in the middle distance.
The paint is applied in quick, feathery strokes, the greens shifting from acid yellow-green in the light to deep blue-green in shadow, under a lavender-grey sky brushed on in broad diagonal sweeps. The winding road itself is picked out in warm pinkish white, pulling the eye through the scene.
Road at Wargemont is reproduced here as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, recreating the original held at the Toledo Museum of Art. It is a reproduction; it is not the museum’s painting.
