Description
A fair-haired infant is shown in profile, turned to the left, wrapped in a full white gown with a wide, softly ruffled collar that fills most of the canvas in loose, buttery strokes. The child’s round face is rendered with tender precision against the broader handling of the fabric, pink cheeks, a small pursed mouth and half-lowered eyes giving a quiet, drowsy expression, while a plump little hand emerges at the lower left in a rosy dab of paint.
Behind the figure, Renoir lays in a dark, mottled green ground, brushed unevenly so that warm browns and golds flicker through the shadow, throwing the pale gown and glowing skin into soft relief. The white of the dress is built from thick, confident sweeps of the brush, catching light and shadow with almost sculptural volume even though the paint remains loose and unblended at close range.
This portrait, held at the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, is offered here as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print. It is a reproduction, not the original painting.
