Description
A nude woman lies on her stomach in the grass, seen from behind, her head turned to rest on her arms beneath a wide straw hat tied with an orange-red ribbon. A white cloth is gathered loosely over her legs, and the setting dissolves into soft greens and blues, with pale pink clouds drifting across a strip of sky at the upper left.
Dated 1892, the picture is built almost entirely from soft, rubbed colour rather than sharp contour, the straw hat the one passage of firmer, more textured paint in the whole canvas. The print is calibrated to keep that hat crisp against the hazier green of the grass and foliage, so it still anchors the composition rather than dissolving with everything around it.
