Description

Nine or so peaches spill across a white cloth, their skins painted in quick strokes of red, orange and yellow that shift colour from fruit to fruit, some blushing deep red on one cheek and pale gold on the other, others almost entirely orange. Renoir builds each peach with only a few loaded strokes, letting a single bright highlight stand for the sheen of the skin rather than modelling the whole surface.

A cluster of leafy branches rises from the centre of the pile, green leaves edged in yellow and touched with a few reds where they turn toward autumn, arching up and out over the fruit like a small shrub still attached to its stem. The greens here are looser and more varied than the peaches themselves, ranging from deep olive to bright chartreuse.

The white cloth beneath is not really white at all: it carries streaks of pale blue, grey and lavender in its folds, and a warm ochre glow where it catches reflected light from the fruit. It falls off the edge of a wooden table at the lower right, the wood rendered in a few broad brown strokes that ground the whole still life. Fruit and flowers were never his main subject, but he returned to still life steadily across his career, using it as a smaller, private exercise in colour between larger figure compositions.

Behind everything, the background dissolves into a soft haze of gold, lavender and warm grey, brushed on thinly with no fixed horizon or object to place the scene indoors or out. That vagueness keeps all the attention on the fruit itself, a warm, informal cluster of colour that would sit well in a kitchen or dining room without ever feeling like a stiff, arranged composition.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.
