Description
A second close self-portrait from the same year: Renoir again in a straw hat, but here his moustache and beard read more reddish-gold, his face turned a little more toward the viewer, the white cravat gathered into a tighter knot at his throat. The red background is brushed with visible vertical strokes rather than left flat, giving the ground a more restless texture than the companion portrait.
Also dated 1910, this version sits alongside the other self-portrait from the same sittings, close in pose but distinct in handling. The print keeps that brushed, striated red intact rather than smoothing it into a flat field, so the two portraits stay visibly different pieces when hung apart or together.
