Description
A large pear stands at the left, yellow shading to red down one side, its stalk upright. Behind it sits a dark crimson apple; a big yellow apple takes the centre; two red apples follow to the right, and at the far right two yellow green ones, one with a red blush across it.
They lie on a white cloth thrown over a yellow ochre table, and the cloth falls into heavy folds with grey and black in the shadows. The wall behind is mottled slate blue, brushed in every direction. Renoir signed at the lower right.
This is a firmer, more sculptural Renoir than the figure paintings suggest. Each fruit is given real weight and a definite edge, and the blue wall is there to push the yellows and reds forward. Dated 1890.
