Description
A woman sits back into a couch with her eyes almost closed, one arm lifted so her hand supports her head. Her dark hair is drawn back. A white and grey patterned cloth is wound round her hips and falls between her knees, and her other hand rests on it. On her feet are soft slippers striped in blue and yellow.
Renoir keys the whole room to heat. Yellow green cushions bank up behind her, and beyond them curtain and wall run through orange, scarlet and rose with almost no cool colour anywhere except the slippers and the cloth. The figure is not so much lit as warmed.
Painted in 1916 and held by the Musee d’Orsay, at 50 by 53 centimetres it is very nearly square, which is unusual for him and pushes the figure forward against the picture plane.
