Description

A woman lies stretched the full width of the canvas on a day bed upholstered in green and blue. She props herself on one elbow among the cushions and raises her other hand into her hair, and she is looking directly out at you, which is rarer in Renoir’s late nudes than the pose suggests.

The colour is almost entirely warm. Rose and cream flesh, a terracotta floor, a rust red wall at the right, and behind her a curtain painted as loose vertical strokes of ochre, blue green and pink that never resolves into cloth. A white sheet slips under her hips, a blue and white bolster is bunched at the lower left, and a thin gold bracelet catches the light on her wrist. Renoir signed at the lower left.

The handling is broad and unhurried. The figure is modelled almost entirely in half tones, with no dark contour anywhere on her: where the body meets the couch, one warm colour simply becomes another.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Frequently Asked Questions

What size will I receive?

The size you choose here. Sizes are set by the short edge, from 30 up to 150 centimetres, and the long edge follows this painting's own proportions, so nothing is cropped or stretched. Every option is shown in centimetres and inches. The original measures 65.3 by 54.4 centimetres, and an original-size option reproduces exactly those dimensions.

How is the reproduction made?

As a reproduction in one of two media; the original is held by Tate and is not for sale. The default is a hand-painted oil reproduction, painted in oils on canvas. The alternative is a canvas art print. You then choose the finish: rolled, stretched on a chassis, or set in a thin or a thick frame.

How long will it take to arrive?

It is made for your order in the size, medium and finish you select. The production time for the medium you pick is shown with the options on this page, and shipping is calculated at checkout for your delivery address.
