Description

A woman sits in a wood-framed armchair, turned slightly toward the viewer, wearing a wide-brimmed straw hat piled with rose-pink bows and trimmed in cream lace. Her dress is a pale, almost cream pink, gathered into full, soft sleeves at the shoulder and cinched with a sage-green sash at the waist; a matching swath of green fabric, perhaps a wrap or parasol cover, drapes over the arm of the chair beside her. Her hands rest loosely together in her lap. Behind her, the entire background is a saturated, deep orange-red, unbroken by any furniture or setting detail.

Renoir builds the dress from broad, confident strokes of pink, cream and white that catch the light in loose folds, while the hat is worked more densely, its ribbons in thick dabs of coral and rose. The green sash and drapery act as the picture’s one cool accent, sitting sharply against both the pink dress and the red wall behind. That red background is painted flat and bold, brushed in visible sweeps rather than blended smooth, and it dominates the canvas far more than any object within it.

Dated around 1895, this belongs to the period when Renoir was working through increasingly saturated, high-key color schemes, often placing a softly dressed figure against a single, intense field of color rather than a naturalistic room or landscape. The hat, dress and pose reflect his continuing fondness for fashionable women at leisure, but the flattened, almost decorative red ground is a bolder, more modern choice than his earlier, more descriptive interiors.

That wall of red gives the picture enormous presence: it will dominate a room the way the pink dress and green sash dominate the canvas, a bold field of warm color with a softly painted figure holding the center. It suits a space that wants real color impact rather than something quiet or restrained, a picture meant to be seen from across the room as much as up close.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing
