Description
A pair of nude female figures fills this softly worked pastel, their pale rose and cream skin built up in loose, feathery strokes against a sky of chalky blue above and warm ochre and gold below. One woman, her hair touched with red, bends forward from the waist with an arm slung across the shoulders of her companion, who reclines and turns her face away, only the curve of her head and hair visible at the lower right. Their bodies interlock in a relaxed, unposed embrace, the outlines kept soft and unfinished at the edges, typical of Renoir’s late working method in pastel.
Dated 1897 and held at the Barnes Foundation, the drawing belongs to Renoir’s long series of studies of women at rest, favoring warmth of color and the play of light across flesh over any narrative detail.
This reproduction of Two Nudes is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes close to the original 46.7 x 45.7 cm format or scaled up, and delivered ready to hang.
