Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir captures a sunlit corner of Algiers in this 1882 street scene, with two veiled women seated on the pale ground in the foreground, their white and pale blue wraps catching the light. Behind them a lush, densely painted green shrub fills the middle of the canvas, and a stone staircase climbs past a whitewashed wall toward distant figures in flowing robes. The loose, flickering brushwork and warm North African light give the scene an immediacy typical of Renoir’s travels outside France.
