Description

A young girl’s head and shoulders dominate the center of this canvas: fair hair swept up under a large dark blue-violet bow or hat, blue eyes glancing to the side, and a soft pink-red top beneath a fresh, rosy-cheeked face. Around this central figure, Renoir scatters half a dozen smaller sketched heads of children in bonnets and hats, some seen in profile, some looking down, set against a warm ochre ground with patches of pale blue.

The effect is that of a working sheet where the same models were studied repeatedly from different angles, a practice sketch rather than a finished portrait. Dated 1893 and held at the Barnes Foundation, this study reflects Renoir’s habit of returning again and again to the heads of young girls before settling on a final composition.

Our reproduction of Study of Girls’ Heads is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes and delivered ready to hang.

The craft

The oil edition of this Renoir artwork is painted by hand on canvas. A canvas art print reproduces the image in ink, with the brushmarks visible in the picture rather than raised paint.

  • Oil editions painted individually by studio artists
  • Canvas prints reproduce the image on canvas
  • Individually quality-inspected before it leaves the studio
  • Made to order in your chosen size and presentation

Materials & Care

Materials

The oil reproduction is painted on cotton canvas; the art print is printed on canvas. Rolled canvas arrives without a stretcher. Stretched canvas is mounted on a wooden stretcher frame; thin and thick frames are separate presentation choices.

On request, the studio provides a certificate for your hand-painted reproduction; it certifies the studio's work, not an original by the artist.

Care

Dust gently with a soft, dry cloth. Avoid cleaning products, prolonged direct sunlight and damp conditions.

Sizing

Choose a size and presentation in the options above. Both editions keep the original image proportions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size options exist for Study of Girls' Heads?

The source painting measures 41.3 x 32.2 cm, and we offer reproductions from that near-original size up to large-format canvases, keeping the central girl's face and the surrounding smaller heads in proportion.

Can I get this as an oil painting rather than a print?

Yes, our studio painters hand-paint the central head and the ring of smaller sketched faces in oil on canvas, or you can select a giclee print on canvas if you prefer a faster, lower-cost option.

What is the typical turnaround for this piece?

A hand-painted version of Study of Girls' Heads generally takes around two weeks given the number of individual faces to render, while the archival print ships within a week of ordering.
