Description
A bather sits with her back to us, a thin green ribbon threaded through her hair, turning to glance back over her shoulder. Her arm rests on a heap of white drapery at the left, and behind her the wall dissolves into a warm, streaky field of ochre, brown and rust with no distinct setting.
Dated 1913, the picture is built with the loaded, confident brushwork of Renoir’s late style, the warm background handled almost as freely as the figure itself. The print keeps the white drapery bright and distinct against that warm wall, so the twist of the pose, the glance back over the shoulder, stays the clear focus of the composition.
