Description
A red-haired bather sits with one leg raised on a white cloth-covered stool, looking directly out at the viewer with a calm, faintly amused expression rather than glancing away. Rosy colour is worked into her cheeks and knees, and loose green foliage fills the background behind her.
Painted in 1914 and held by the Artizon Museum, the canvas (55 by 44 cm) is unusual among Renoir’s bathers for that direct, engaged gaze. The print keeps the warmth of the skin and the flush of colour in the face and joints strong, since it is the sustained eye contact, as much as the palette, that carries this particular picture.
