Description
Renoir paints a half-nude woman reclining against a mound of white pillows, a loosely draped red cloth spilling around her. A pale blue ribbon slips over her shoulder and down across her chest, and a single rose rests near her hand at the base of the canvas, the detail that gives the painting its name, “la rose.” The brushwork is loose and intimate, built from soft flesh tones set against the sweep of white linen and deep red.
Painted in 1872 and held today at the Musee d’Orsay, this small, tender study shows Renoir already at ease with the informal, sensuous portraiture that would define much of his career.
