Description
A woman is seen from behind, seated sideways in a large red upholstered chair, absorbed in a book held open in both hands. Her dark red hair is gathered into a loose bun, and her white blouse slips off one shoulder, baring her neck and back. A deep red skirt is bunched around her legs, one bare foot tucked up onto the seat cushion.
Renoir surrounds her with a richly decorated interior: a blue curtain falls at the left, and behind her a patterned screen or hanging glows with gold, green and blue tones. The brushwork is loose and warm throughout, with the red of the chair and skirt echoing across the canvas and the woman’s pale skin standing out softly against the surrounding colour.
This painting is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclée canvas print, both faithful reproductions of the original held at the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, not the original work itself.
