Description
An older woman faces us directly, her auburn hair parted neatly at the centre and drawn back from her face, her expression composed and reserved. She wears a fitted black dress, its dark fabric relieved by a cascade of white lace at the throat, an elaborate ruffled jabot that falls in long, textured folds down the front of her bodice.
Renoir sets her against a mottled, atmospheric background of green and grey with small flecks of pink and yellow scattered throughout, painted in short, broken strokes that give the whole surface a shimmering, almost tapestry-like texture. The lace itself is built up in thick, crumpled strokes of white and pale grey, contrasting sharply with the flat, deep black of her dress.
This portrait is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, made by hand to recreate its rich texture and colour, or as an archival giclee canvas print from a high-resolution image. Both are reproductions for your home, not the original painting by Renoir.
