Description

A young woman looks off to one side beneath a wide, pale straw hat trimmed with a small green leaf. Her fair hair is caught up loosely, her blue eyes are calm and direct in profile, and a thin gold necklace rests at her throat above a pink, floral-patterned dress gathered at the shoulder with a soft rosette.

Renoir builds the picture from loose, feathered strokes of salmon pink, ochre and sky blue, letting the background dissolve into soft washes of colour behind the sitter. The brushwork on the hat and dress stays open and sketchy, while the face is modelled more smoothly, giving the portrait a sense of light and immediacy.
