Description
Worked in pastel, this study shows an infant with reddish-brown hair turning to glance off to the side, chubby cheeks touched with pink and a small open mouth giving a soft, curious expression. The chalky strokes of the medium are clearly visible in the hair and skin, built up in warm strokes of ochre, rose and cream rather than blended smooth, true to the drawing’s informal, sketch-like character.
The child wears a loose white garment with pale blue trim at the collar, both small hands raised and half-open before the chest as if reaching for something, sketched in quick, reddish strokes with the paper left bare in places. Behind, Renoir lays in a loose field of yellow-green, ochre and rust in broad hatched marks, giving the whole sheet a warm, unfinished glow that frames the more carefully worked face.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, reproducing Renoir’s original pastel. It is a reproduction, not the original work.
