Description
Painted in 1897, this close, tender portrait shows a small child seen from the shoulders up, eyes cast down and lips slightly parted, as if caught mid-thought. A small pink ribbon is knotted into the strawberry-blond hair, and the child wears a loose white smock rendered in broad, creamy strokes.
The whole canvas glows with warm colour: rust and amber fill the background, honeyed gold runs through the hair, and soft coral touches the cheeks and mouth. Renoir blends the face softly while leaving the hair and backdrop in looser, visible brushwork, a gentleness of handling fitting for a child’s portrait.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print. It reproduces the composition held at the Barnes Foundation; it is a reproduction, not the original work.
