Description
A young woman is seen close to, her head bowed and her eyes lowered. She wears a wide conical straw hat painted in strokes of yellow that radiate from its point, and a blue scarf that passes under the brim and falls over both shoulders. Below it, a white blouse.
The paint is remarkable: thin, dry, and scrubbed over a coarse pale ground that shows through in every passage, with all four edges left bare. The colour is almost entirely pale blue, green and yellow, and pink appears only in the face. It has the transparency of watercolour while being oil.
Renoir signed at the lower left. The canvas is dated 1882; our catalogue records no collection and no dimensions for it, so we state neither.
