Description
A young woman with a mass of auburn hair piled loosely on top of her head turns her pale blue eyes to the side, her lips slightly parted in a soft, half-smiling expression. She wears a dark coat with a deep, fur-like collar and a burgundy scarf knotted at her throat, the dark fabric painted in loose, thick, almost dry strokes that contrast with the smooth handling of her face.
Behind her, Renoir lays in a loose backdrop of green on one side and warm gold and rust on the other, so her pale skin and copper hair seem to glow between the two fields of colour. The paint is at its most delicate around her eyes and mouth, and at its boldest and most textured in the dark coat.
This portrait of a woman is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas, painted by hand to recreate its rich colour contrasts, or as an archival giclee canvas print made from a high-resolution scan of the original, currently held in Room 903. Both are reproductions for your own wall, not the original 1897 painting.
