Description

A woman rests her chin on one hand, dark hair swept loosely back, wearing a floral dress with a small posy of roses tucked at her waist. The whole portrait is painted in a single warm sepia brown, from the deepest shadow behind her to the pale highlight of her face.

Rather than full colour, Renoir builds this study entirely in tone, thin brown wash for the background, thicker strokes for hair and dress, so the picture reads almost like a warm, luminous drawing rather than a finished oil.
