Description
An older man with a grey moustache and curling grey hair sits leaning forward, a dark cap on his head and a pipe held to his lips between two fingers. He wears a dark waistcoat over a loose white shirt, and in front of him on the table stand a tall glass of beer and a smaller glass beside it.
Renoir sets the sitter’s ruddy, weathered face and pale blue eyes against a warm, loosely brushed brown background, so that attention stays on the folds of white sleeve and the glint of light on the glasses. The handling is direct and confident, with none of the softness Renoir gave his younger female sitters.
This piece is offered as a hand-painted oil reproduction on canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, a reproduction of Renoir’s original portrait, which is held at the Clark Art Institute and not the painting itself.
