Description
A bearded man sits with one hand raised near his chin, cigarette between his fingers, looking off to one side with an alert, thoughtful expression. His dark suit is painted loosely against a rich, mottled red background, the same warm tone picked up faintly in the green upholstery of his chair.
This is Paul Berard, a diplomat and one of Renoir’s most important early patrons, whose family estate at Wargemont Renoir visited and painted often. The portrait is direct and finished, with real attention paid to the sitter’s steady gaze.
Reproduced as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival canvas print, in a range of sizes, framed or unframed.
