Description
A wide, cloud-filled sky dominates the upper half of this seaside canvas, painted in soft blues and whites with billowing clouds that stretch across the horizon above a band of deep blue sea. Below, an ochre and green cliff top, dotted with patches of red-orange earth and scrubby grass, slopes down toward the water.
Two small figures, children in light-colored clothing with hints of pink and white, sit together near the edge of the cliff, gazing out toward the sea, their small scale emphasizing the openness of the sky and water around them. Painted in 1880 and titled Sur la falaise, this landscape shows Renoir turning his loose, luminous brushwork to the coast rather than to the figure studies and portraits for which he is best known.
Our reproduction of Sur la falaise is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes and delivered ready to hang.
