Description
A bather sits with her back to us, dark red hair pinned up, looking out over a wide expanse of green-blue sea toward an orange-brown headland on the horizon. Rocks break the water’s surface at the right, painted in the same warm tones as the distant cliff, tying foreground and horizon together.
Painted in 1882, the composition is built on a simple, strong division between the pale figure, the cool sea and the warm land beyond, with almost no incidental detail to distract from it. The print keeps that sea a true, saturated green-blue, since the picture depends on the contrast between it and the warmth of the skin and headland.
