Description
Pierre-Auguste Renoir sketches his wife in this delicate watercolor, her face tilted down and largely shadowed beneath a wide, pale yellow straw hat wrapped with a white band. A touch of blue at her collar and a small red ribbon at her throat provide the only strong color accents against the warm, unfinished cream of the paper, which Renoir leaves visible around the barely sketched shoulders. Dated to around 1883, the drawing has an unguarded, sketchbook intimacy.
