Description
This small, freely brushed sketch shows a cluster of trees seen from a low bank, their foliage painted in quick dabs of green, gold, and rust orange that suggest the warm light of the Cagnes countryside. A single slender tree stands apart on the left, while the mass of foliage on the right glows with autumnal reds and oranges against a pale blue sky.
The foreground is laid in with broad strokes of pink, tan, and ochre, likely the sunbaked earth of the hillside, rendered so loosely that the ground almost dissolves into pure colour, a hallmark of Renoir’s late, rapid outdoor studies made near his home in the south.
The original is held by Museum Barberini. What is offered here is a faithful reproduction, either a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes.
