Description
On a curving stretch of Guernsey coastline, pale cliffs rise above a sheltered bay of blue grey water under a soft sky streaked with pink cloud. Renoir fills the sandy foreground with a small group of bathers, some standing at the water’s edge in pale dresses, others perched nude or semi-nude on the rocks, their bodies rendered in loose strokes of pink and cream against the golden sand.
Painted during Renoir’s stay on the Channel Island, the picture combines the airy, light-filled landscape he found there with the informal bathing groups that became one of his favorite subjects, the figures blended into the setting rather than posed for a formal composition.
The painting is part of the collection of the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek. What is offered here is not that original but a faithful reproduction: a hand-painted oil version on canvas, recreated stroke by stroke by a professional painter, or an archival canvas print made with fade-resistant pigment inks, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
