Description
Jean Renoir and Gabrielle shows a dark-haired young woman holding a fair-haired child close against her cheek, the two faces nearly touching. The woman’s eyes are lowered toward the child, who looks off to the side with rosy cheeks and tousled blond hair. The child wears a loose white smock with a soft collar, and the woman is dressed in a rust-orange garment.
Renoir builds the scene with warm, blended strokes in the two faces and skin, set against a background of loosely brushed greens flecked with touches of red and gold. The closeness of the two figures, cheek to cheek, gives the portrait a tender, intimate feel typical of Renoir’s family scenes from this period.
Painted in 1896 and held at the Murauchi Art Museum, the canvas measures 41 by 32.5 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes so the intimate portrait can suit a bedroom, a hallway, or a larger wall.
