Description
Head of a Child is a close portrait of a small child with a tousled mass of curly reddish-brown hair framing a round, pale face. The child’s large dark eyes look directly out at the viewer, with a faint, slightly crooked smile playing on the lips and a soft flush of pink on the cheeks.
The child wears a white lace-trimmed collar over a coral-red garment, crossed by dark ribbon straps at the shoulders. Renoir works the surface with soft, blended strokes and a warm, muted palette, the deep reddish-brown background dissolving into shadow around the glowing highlights of the face and hair.
Painted in 1877 and held at Dumbarton Oaks, the original measures 34.29 by 30.5 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, available in a range of sizes to suit any wall.
