Description
Grape Gatherers (Vendangeuses) shows two young women resting on a grassy dune beside a tree trunk. One lies stretched out on her back with her arm bent behind her head, her blue skirt loose around her legs and her shoes kicked off nearby. The other sits upright beside her, head tilted back as she drinks from a small dark jug held in a raised hand. Farther off, a few small figures stand near the crest of the slope.
Renoir paints the scene with soft, blended strokes, letting the pink-orange ground and sage-green grass merge into the pale blue sky. The two blue skirts and rosy skin tones stand out clearly against the warm, hazy landscape, giving the painting the feel of a quiet break in the middle of a day’s work.
Held at the Barnes Foundation, the original canvas measures 54.5 by 66 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes so this pause in the fields can suit any room.
