Description
Gladioli in a Vase is a large, densely packed flower still life. Tall stems of coral and salmon-pink gladioli fan out from a blue and white patterned ceramic vase, joined by deep red roses, sprays of small white blossoms, and a spotted white lily near the base. The bouquet fills most of the canvas against a very dark, undefined background.
Renoir builds the flowers with thick, loaded strokes that catch the light on each petal, while the vase and the white tablecloth beneath it are painted more smoothly. The contrast between the near-black background and the warm coral and cream blooms gives the whole composition a strong, glowing presence.
Painted in 1875 and held at the National Gallery, the original canvas measures 73.6 by 60.4 centimetres. We reproduce it as a hand-painted oil on canvas or as an archival print, offered in a range of sizes so this full bouquet can suit a dining room or an entryway wall.
