Description
Renoir paints the huntress Diana seated on a rock outcrop, drawing back a long bow with both hands, a swatch of greenish fur tied at her waist with a coral pink sash. At her feet lies a deer she has already brought down, an arrow still in its side. Behind her a birch trunk and dense autumn foliage close off the scene, with a small wedge of blue sky breaking through at upper left.
The figure is solid and grounded rather than idealized, painted with the same frank attention Renoir gave his models from life, even while the subject is drawn from myth. It is an early, ambitious work, large in scale and serious in its academic subject.
This painting is reproduced as a fine-art giclee print on canvas or paper, with the rocky grays and woodland greens kept true to the original. Several sizes are available, so this large-format composition can be scaled to a wall of any size.
