Description
The companion to Renoir’s other caryatid panel, this canvas again shows two nude women raising a green garland overhead, arms crossing above them in the same tall, narrow format. Here the red-haired figure stands more fully turned, her back to the viewer, while her companion faces forward holding a small sheaf of greenery.
Painted in 1910 and held by the Barnes Foundation, this panel (130.5 by 45.1 cm) was designed to hang as the matching half of a pair, the two canvases meant to face each other across a doorway or niche. The print keeps the pale, even modelling consistent with its companion piece, so the two read as a true set when hung together.
