Description
White and rust-orange chrysanthemums crowd together in a blue-and-white pitcher, their petals built from thick, separate strokes of paint rather than blended colour. The warm brown background is brushed loosely enough that it reads almost as another layer of the bouquet.
Painted in 1919, the year of Renoir’s death, and held by the Barnes Foundation, the small canvas (40.3 by 35.2 cm) shows his very last still-life work, the paint applied with the same loaded, confident touch as his late figures. The print keeps the white blooms bright against the warm brown ground, so the bouquet still reads as the clear centre of the canvas.
