Description
A standing bather holds a piece of orange fruit up in one hand, her curling reddish-blonde hair loose around her shoulders, a white cloth draped over her other arm. She stands within a garden of warm ochre and green brushwork, a small patch of blue sky breaking through the foliage at the upper left.
Painted in 1917 and held by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the canvas (52.7 by 33 cm) belongs to Renoir’s final years, when he continued painting from a wheelchair with brushes strapped to his hand. The print keeps the warm gold of the garden glowing around the pale figure, so the whole canvas reads as sunlit rather than shadowed.
