Description
A deep blue and white footed bowl, its rim beaded with white dots, is piled high with a mountain of apples in green and rosy red, so many that several fruits tumble over the edge and scatter across the table below. Four or five loose apples lie on the tablecloth beside the bowl’s short white feet, echoing the pile above.
Renoir dissolves the background into a soft, almost weightless haze of lavender, pink, and pale blue, quite unlike the richly worked, mottled greens and blues of the tablecloth beneath the bowl. Against that hazy backdrop, the deep cobalt of the bowl and the thickly painted red-and-green apples read as the most solid, vivid elements in the whole canvas.
This abundant fruit still life, Apples in a Dish, held at the Clark Art Institute, is offered as a made-to-order canvas reproduction in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
