Description
A generous cluster of fruit tumbles across a rumpled white cloth: red-striped and deep crimson apples piled toward the back, two yellow-green lemons with glossy highlighted skins, a smaller apple streaked in red and gold at the front left, and a round green fruit with its short stem still attached resting apart from the rest.
Renoir lets the cloth fold and bunch beneath the fruit, its whites and greys catching a few stray streaks of red as if juice or reflected color has bled onto the fabric, while the surrounding tabletop dissolves into a warm blend of rust, ochre, and brown. Each fruit is built from thick, rounded strokes, the lemons cooler and sharper in tone against the warmer reds of the apples.
This abundant fruit still life, Apples and Lemons on a Cloth (Pommes et citrons sur une nappe), held at the Barnes Foundation, is offered as a made-to-order canvas reproduction in a range of sizes up to large formats, shipped worldwide.
