A family grouped on one canvas, painted by hand in oil from a photograph of each person, in a faithful likeness or in Renoir’s soft, warm colour.
Why one photograph per person
In a group snapshot every face is a thumbnail, and a thumbnail gives a painter nothing to work from. Individual daylight photographs, taken close, give each likeness its own reference before the group is arranged.
Add each person’s name and age. A child changes quickly, and a four-year-old is not drawn like a seven-year-old.
The household in Renoir’s pictures
In autumn 1878 the publisher Georges Charpentier paid Renoir 1000 francs for a portrait of his wife and children. In Madame Georges Charpentier and her Children, Marguerite Charpentier sits with her daughter Georgette and son Paul, and Georgette’s Newfoundland, Porthos, lies on the floor. The picture hung at the Salon of 1879. Renoir put the dog among the children, so the animal belongs to the group.
His own family is in The Artist’s Family (La Famille de l’artiste), 1896. Aline Charigot stands at the centre with their son Pierre holding her arm, Jean is in front, held up by the nursemaid Gabrielle Renard, and a girl who was probably a neighbour or friend completes it. The setting is the garden of the family’s Paris home.
Warm or faithful
The faithful version keeps clothes, room and colours as photographed. In the Renoir version every face stays recognisable while the whole scene warms, skin laid in broken touches. It is painted after his manner and is not an original Renoir.
Room for every face
Four faces on a small canvas blur. Plan toward the large end. Sizes keep the proportions of your main photograph, rolled, stretched on a wooden frame, or framed.
- Family of three, smallest canvas, rolled, starts at $305 (30 × 40 cm, rolled canvas).
- Each further person or animal is one more figure in the quote.
- Painting takes 2 to 4 weeks.
- Photographs of the finished canvas arrive before dispatch, so the whole family can check the faces.
- Shipping is free worldwide and tracked. Carriers: UPS or DHL.
- After dispatch, allow 5 to 7 business days.
Group questions
Can someone who has died stand in the group?
Yes. Choose a photograph from the age the family remembers and say where they stand. For old or black and white pictures, describe the colouring in a sentence.
A baby arrived after the photographs. Can it be added?
Yes. Send a photograph of the baby and one of whoever will hold it. Show how it will be held, because hands are where group paintings go wrong.
Where does the dog sit?
On the floor near the children, like Porthos, or on a lap. Photograph it at its own eye level and read the pet portrait page. All subjects are on the custom Renoir painting page.
One face looks off. What now?
Say so after the approval photographs and it is corrected before dispatch. A delivered painting can also be returned. Return period: 30 days.
You can cancel your order at any time until it ships.
Choose the result you want
This service is not limited to copying an artist style. You can request a faithful, neutral oil painting from your photograph, or a more expressive interpretation.
The studio preserves the faces, setting, colours and proportions of your reference, without imitating a famous painter.
The same subject is reimagined with a more expressive palette, rhythm and brushwork. The studio confirms feasibility before production.
Custom painting questions
Can you paint my photo faithfully without copying a famous artist's style?
Yes. Choose the faithful, neutral direction and the studio will preserve the people, setting, colours and proportions of your reference while translating it into a hand-painted oil painting.
Can I request a more artistic interpretation?
Yes. Choose the creative direction and describe the mood, palette and brushwork you want. Your quote confirms what is feasible before any painting begins.
Can you combine several photographs in one painting?
Yes. Several reference photographs can be combined into one coherent composition. Mention who or what must appear, the preferred background and any details that must not be changed.
Will I see the painting before it ships?
Yes. When your painting is finished, we send you a photo of it before it ships. If anything needs adjusting, we correct it before the painting is dispatched.
