Description
A mother in an elegant black gown sits at the center of a richly decorated drawing room, her two young daughters beside her. The younger girl sits on the sofa’s arm in a pale blue dress trimmed with white lace, while the older girl, in a matching blue dress, perches on the back of a large black-and-white dog stretched across the floor. Behind them, a folding screen painted with peacocks and a table set with flowers and fruit fill the room with pattern and color.
Painted in 1878, the scene is a study in contrasts: the mother’s severe black dress and pearl necklace against the soft blue and white of the children’s clothes, and the flat decorative screen against the deep, layered textures of the sofa and rug. Every surface, from lace to fur to porcelain, is rendered with a different touch of the brush.
The print reproduces the warmth of that interior in full, from the black silk to the blue dresses to the dog’s shaggy coat. Order it as a canvas or fine-art paper giclée print, sized for a living room or entryway wall.
