Description
This canvas is a copy Renoir painted in 1861 after Rubens’s composition “The Council of the Gods,” made as a young artist’s study of a Baroque master. It crowds the canvas with a gathering of gods and goddesses on clouds: an enthroned Jupiter at left, an assembly of draped and nude figures around him, and, striding through the center, a fair-haired figure wrapped in a flowing red cloak, followed by a helmeted warrior, a dog, and a knot of tussling bodies at right.
The palette is built on warm golden ochre and honeyed cream in the sky, set against passages of dusky blue-grey drapery and the bright red of the central cloak, with flesh tones throughout tying the crowded composition together.
This work is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction on artist-grade canvas or as an archival giclee canvas print, made to order in the size of your choice, offered framed or unframed, and shipped worldwide.
