Description
A very small portrait shows a young woman in reddish-orange clothing, her hair swept back beneath a soft hat, her expression quiet and turned slightly away. Renoir works fast and loose throughout, a golden background barely broken by a few sketched strokes of green.
Held by the Barnes Foundation, the tiny canvas (18.8 by 15.6 cm) is closer to a rapid colour study than a finished commission, the warm red of the clothing set directly against the equally warm gold behind it. The print keeps that closeness in tone between figure and ground intact, since separating them too sharply would misrepresent the sketch’s original character.
