Description
A young girl with reddish-blonde hair and dark eyes looks down and to the side, her pale face softly modeled against a hazy blue background. She wears a loose blue garment over her shoulders, painted in broad, sweeping strokes that leave the raw white canvas visible at the edges and along the lower portion of the picture.
The unfinished quality is part of what makes this study striking: Renoir has fully resolved the face while treating the clothing and background as quick, unblended passages of blue, giving the sense of a portrait caught mid-creation. The cool blue tones throughout are broken only by the warm flush of her cheeks and the golden highlights in her hair.
This painting is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in sizes true to the original proportions, held at the National Museum Cardiff.
