Description
Renoir frames the town of Villeneuve-les-Avignon through a screen of overhanging tree branches, their green foliage arching in from both sides of the canvas. At the center stands a tall, pale square tower rising above a cluster of pink-roofed houses, with a strip of blue water and a sunlit green meadow filling the foreground, and white flowering shrubs dotted along the bank.
Light plays across the scene in soft, broken touches of green, gold, and blue, the tower catching the warmest sun while the trees around it stay cool and shadowed. It is a quiet, sun-filled view of a small Provencal town seen from across the water.
Held today at the Wallraf-Richartz Museum, this painting is available as a hand-painted oil reproduction or an archival canvas print, made to order in the size of your choice.
