Description
A young girl’s head and shoulders dominate the center of this canvas: fair hair swept up under a large dark blue-violet bow or hat, blue eyes glancing to the side, and a soft pink-red top beneath a fresh, rosy-cheeked face. Around this central figure, Renoir scatters half a dozen smaller sketched heads of children in bonnets and hats, some seen in profile, some looking down, set against a warm ochre ground with patches of pale blue.
The effect is that of a working sheet where the same models were studied repeatedly from different angles, a practice sketch rather than a finished portrait. Dated 1893 and held at the Barnes Foundation, this study reflects Renoir’s habit of returning again and again to the heads of young girls before settling on a final composition.
Our reproduction of Study of Girls’ Heads is available as a hand-painted oil copy on canvas or as an archival giclee print, made to order in a range of sizes and delivered ready to hang.
